A unique designer Art Deco Steinway!

This very unique Steinway Model S was handcrafted in New York in 1940. In the early 1940s, Steinway & Sons commissioned a series of piano designs from renowned industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague. This Art Deco Steinway Model S 5'1'' Baby Grand Piano bears one of these rare and sought-after designs. All-original mechanically and aesthically, this piano retains all of Teague's design elements, including the specially-designed pedal lyre, leg assembly, rounded cabinet and lid elements, and nickel harp glazing. The cabinet features a classic polished ebony lacquer finish.

Hand-signed by Theodore E. Steinway

This instrument bears the signature of Theodore Edwin Steinway (1883-1957), grandson of company founder Henry E. Steinway and president of Steinway & Sons from 1927 to 1955.  Theodore E. Steinway guided the company through many of the most tumultuous periods of the 20th century (including the Great Depression and World War II) and worked to ensure the company remained true to the European traditions of handmade pianocraft at a time when many other piano makers embraced industrialized mass-production.

About Walter Dorwin Teague

Often referred to as the "Dean of Industrial Design", Walter Dorwin Teague pioneered the establishment of industrial design as a profession in the United States. Teague is recognized as a critical figure in the spread of mid-century modernism in America. Known for his groundbreaking product designs for companies such as Kodak, Ford, Texaco and Boeing, he is the founder of the Teague Design Consultancy, which continues to contribute designs for many of the products with which we interact on a daily basis.

About the Steinway Model S (from the manufacturer)

Condition notes

This piano retains all original Steinway parts and remains eminently playable in its current condition.  It appears to have received periodic maintenance and service over the years but exhibits a modest and expected degree of incidental wear commensurate with an instrument of its age.
