Originally crafted in New York in 1927, this beautiful Louis XV Steinway Model A came to us from the home of a private owner here in the Northeast who cared for it very well. It is in lovely condition and appears to have received substantial restoration work a number of years ago.
The Louis XV grand has been a favorite of Steinway's Special Collection series for generations. Its elegantly carved cabinet will be a striking visual centerpiece in any setting. This lovely decorator cabinet is almost exclusively seen in the smaller Model M; it is extremely rare to find a larger Model A with this sought-after Louis XV styling.
The elegance of 18th-century France is reproduced in this delicately hand carved instrument made of beautiful walnut wood in the rare Louis XV carved style, including the legs and molding. Even the top lid of the piano is scalloped in beautiful detail.
The Steinway Model A was redesigned a number of times during its production run, resulting in examples of the Model A existing in three different sizes (6', 6'2'', and 6'4''). The A-III (also known as the 'Long A') is the 6'4'' version which was produced from 1913 to 1945. Its limited production run means that the A-III is the rarest of the different versions of the A, and it is sought-after for its remarkable tone and power. Many have commented that the A-III rivals the Steinway B in volume and tonal output. Some speculate that this is why Steinway reverted to smaller versions of the A in their Hamburg factory in the 1940s (and discontinued production entirely in New York for over 50 years), as the A-III presented buyers with a musically attractive alternative to the larger (and more expensive) Model B.
The smaller Model A-II is still available new from Steinway; the currently-available Crown Jewel Walnut Model A in the standard traditional cabinet sells new for $154,000 without the ornate Louis XV styling. We're confident you'll appreciate this piano's amazing value.
