This Steinway Model B semi-concert grand piano was originally crafted in New York in 1895. It was purchased new in 1896 by a private owner who kept it in her townhouse in Boston's Beacon Hill neighborhood. A patron of the arts and one of the founders of the Boston Symphony, she often hosted featured pianists touring from Europe and New York City, and she purchased this instrument so that the prominent musicians of the day would have an instrument of the highest quality to play while they stayed in her home.
This instrument has been respectfully owned and treasured by the same family for its entire 130-year lifetime, arriving at our shop from the home of the original owner's great-great-grandson.
This piano's Victorian figured mahogany cabinet will be welcome in any well-appointed home. All elements of its classic case are intact, including lattice music rack and Victorian-era carved "flower pot" legs and pedal lyre.
The owners commissioned an extensive restoration of this instrument by a Steinway technician in 1994. Based on documentation provided by the prior owner, this work included the following:
As a result this is a very enjoyable instrument to play. The tone has a depth and complexity we always expect with Steinway pianos. The recently restored action is smooth and consistent.
The Model B is the quintessential semi-concert grand piano, with a tone that is as distinctive as it is satisfying. It is certain to fill any space with the rich, complex, and nuanced tone that one can only achieve with a Steinway.

The list includes the giants in classical, jazz, and popular music; the men and women who have shaped the world’s musical heritage. Today, more than 98 percent of the world’s active concert pianists choose to perform on Steinway pianos. The joy of playing and owning a Steinway piano, however, is not the exclusive domain of the virtuosi. Rather, it is a world open to all who share a love of music, fine craftsmanship and enduring quality.
Some areas of the lid and cabinet exhibit incidental cosmetic lightening due to sun exposure since the 1994 restoration; this is extremely common in wood-finish pianos and should not likely diminish the overall visual presentation in most settings. We've priced this piano extremely affordably with this in mind.
